Claddagh Ring: A Token of Love, Friendship, And Loyalty

Words mean a lot, but when expressing love, loyalty, and friendship, tangible tokens lend an air of excitement to the unfolding drama. Flowers, jewelries, and a host of other things will do it nicely. But if you want your token to be more eloquent and lasting, an Irish Claddagh ring with its meaning and symbolism will convey your sentiments persuasively. To the Irish, it is a celebrated token of such feelings. To the rest of the world, it is a fascinating declaration of your regard toward another. On a romantic note, by giving this ring you could be saying “I give you my heart crowned with my love.” It could also be taken to mean “may love and friendship reign.”

Design of the Ring

Out of a myriad of rings in countless arrays of artistic designs, how can you tell a Claddagh ring from others? A Claddagh ring can be easily recognized with its distinctive design consisting of the basic elements of a crown on top of two hands holding a single heart. Be they silver Claddagh rings, gold ones, or the jewel-encrusted variety, all are clearly identified as Claddagh because of that feature.

Ways of Wearing the Ring

You can tell by the way the Claddagh ring is worn if the person is free or not, romantically speaking. When worn on one’s right hand and the heart outwardly pointing toward the fingernail, it means the wearer is not in any serious relationship-and therefore free. If it is found on one’s right hand but with the heart inwardly pointing toward the knuckle, the word is out that the person’s heart is no longer available. A Claddagh ring on the Left Hand with the heart pointing outward signifies that the person is engaged. Finally, when already married, the ring is worn on one’s left hand with the heart pointing inward.

Tales of the Ring

Although no one can tell of the exact origin of the Claddagh ring, there are quite a few tales that surround it. One of the most popular and perhaps closer to the historical truth is the one about a man named Richard Joyce who left his native Galway for West Indies to work but with the intention of going back home eventually to marry his beloved. On the voyage, the ship he was sailing on was captured by pirates and he was sold in Algiers as a slave to a rich Moorish goldsmith who eventually trained him in this craft. When William III ascended to the throne of England, he demanded that the Moors release all British subjects. All the while Richard had turned out to be an accomplished goldsmith such that his master was reluctant to lose him being such an asset to the business. So the Moor offered him the hand of his only daughter and part of his wealth to entice Richard to stay. But to no avail. Richard declined the offer and went home to Galway to marry his beloved. Upon his return, he gave her a ring that he forged during his stay in Algiers to symbolize his love, a ring which became now known as the Claddagh ring.

So celebrate love, loyalty, and friendship by giving your loved ones a Claddagh ring. With an array of designs to choose from at Irish Indeed! there is certainly one that will best suit him or her. Sterling silver Claddagh rings, white or yellow gold, or a combination, inlaid with semiprecious and precious stones, the range of choices will amaze you.

How did the White race become the token for all other races to be like?

Big homes, expensive cars, straight hair, status, class. This is how we’ve lived for centuries but now, all other races seem to want this also. Are they just catching up to us or do they really want to act like us? I’m proud to be a WHITE Person

“Big homes, expensive cars, straight hair, status, class.”
—-And exactly how do you know that all white people possess these things and that all others are striving for them?

And why is it that you think these things are “white”?
Possessions, straight hair, class, culture, etc…- These things are not “white” any more than they are “black” or anything else. They belong to no one.

By the way, those of you who are demeaning white people in response to this question are just as racist as the asker.

****It’s easy wrote: “Everybody else wants to bring the
“white man” down TO THEIR LEVEL if they can’t be like them.”
—-Who wants to bring the “white man” down? All other races? You are stereotyping. There are people of other races who do not like white people and make judgements based upon them being white, but entire races of people do not feel this way. Not everyone of any given group thinks, says, does, and feels the same.

“I am so sick of polictical correctness I wanna puke. If you want to be treated like white people, ACT LIKE WHITE PEOPLE otherwise shut up and go sit on your porch.”
—-I can’t speak for everyone, but I could care less about political correctness. What concerns me is equal respect and treatment for all people. What is “acting white”? What do people need to do in order to live up to your code of “whiteness”? Personally, I am happy and content to act however I want- to be MYSELF. Why would people sit on their porch if they don’t want to do whatever it is that you think is “acting white”? I like sitting on my porch, especially with a hot cup of coffee when it’s cold out side. But it has nothing to do with anything other than me being myself.

“How come the Asians living in the U.S. aren’t bitching and moaning about being treated inferior?”
—-How do you know what Asians living in the U.S. are/aren’t b*tching and moaning about?

“OH WAIT, I KNOW, BECAUSE THEY AREN’T COMMITING CRIMES AND ACTING LIKE DUMBASS’S. THEY GRADUATE FROM SCHOOL, GET JOBS AND DON’T BECOME BABY-DADDY’S”
—-And exactly how do you know this? Statistics? Statistics are unreliable. Many crimes are never reported. And there are a great many false police reports filed, false convictions, etc… Statistics can be fudged to reflect positively or negatively in any direction. You also cannot fairly compare statistics of populations that differ in numbers.

“Yeah go ahead and give me a thumbs down all you bigots that pretend that you’re so pc.”
—-We don’t need your permission to give you a thumbs down. And you are a hypocrite to call anyone a bigot since you are, indeed, a bigot.

“How many of you ‘whites’ have blacks as true friends? How many of you ‘blacks’ have whites as actual friends. I’VE MADE MY POINT.”
—-I can’t speak for anyone else other than myself (and my husband), and neither can you. I grew up in a black neighborhood. Most of my friends were/are black. I’ve always dated black guys. My husband is black. Before we got together, my husband dated females of several different races. He had friends who were black, white, and latino. He lived in neighborhoods that included all three. So what was your point? However, one need not have friends of all races, or experience other cultures, in order to desire equal respect and treatment for all people. To say otherwise is like saying that you have to have a companion animal (pet) in order to be against cruelty to non-humans. You’re contradicting yourself, and I would think it to be rather amusing if this subject wasn’t so serious.

Discovery wrote: “If we measured crimes, your “pure race” would win in total due to all of the crimes that they weren’t charged for and acquitted for because killing people, burning up their churches, and raping little girls was okay, as long as you were white.”
—-I’ll repeat part of my response to it’s easy: Statistics are unreliable. Many crimes are never reported. And there are a great many false police reports filed, false convictions, etc… Statistics can be fudged to reflect positively or negatively in any direction. You also cannot fairly compare statistics of populations that differ in numbers.

“Are you referring to the level of being merciless murderers of innocent black children, women and men? Are you referring to killing and robbing innocent Indians of their land, are you referring to burning crosses in the yard of minorities, being the leaders of serial killers, serial rapists, pedophile. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the white race is not void of it’s horrible history”
—-I understand your frustration when you read responses given by people like it’s easy. However, this constant bickering back and forth regarding who did what to whom gets us absolutely no where. Doing as such is nothing short of running around in circles. There is no end. In order to end racism, and other forms of prejudice, we must stop the blame game. We each have a choice to let our wounds heal and recognize that we are all human beings capable of both good and bad regardless of race, culture, religion, ability, etc…

“The white race is not the race to admire and look up to.”
—-RACE itself isn’t something to admire or look up to. Race doesn’t define a person or predetermine what/who a person will become.

“Have quickly do you forget that your race is responsible for countless atrocities that the world has seen globally, stemming from your “elite, innocent, pure” race. You are obviously delusional and have the inability to see clearly. Try again, your point makes absolutely no sense.”
—-Name one race in which people have not committed atrocities. I doubt that you would be able to do so. People of all races are capable of both positive and negative behavior. So what purpose is served by pointing out the positive or negative behavior of people within any given race? None! The fact that people of all races are capable of both positive and negative behavior is one of the very reasons why this argument cannot be won. For every positive or negative thing you mention about one race, someone else can mention a positive or negative thing about another race. And it’s all irrelevant since race has nothing to do with those positives and negatives. Race doesn’t predetermine anything. The individual is who matters, and the individual should be the focus.

****It’s easy wrote: “TO ANO KISS MY ***”
—-I’ll pass. Ditto on what I’ve already said regarding statistics.
