Transmission Chains – Latest Swerve

WYKO, an ERIKS Company, has finally announced its latest transmission product with the introduction of the Fenner PLUS range of transmission chain and sprockets. The introduction of Fenner Plus transmission roller has been by far the most apparent initiative of the company. The solid rollers, manufactured to achieve an extremely high surface hardness, ensure high wear resistance. It is this feature of the transmission chains that guarantees performance of the chain in even the most hostile environments and also helps in the improvement in the life of the chain. Another attribute that helps to extend the life of the chain is the Shot peened plates. This process relieves the stresses that build up during manufacture and reduces the likelihood of tiredness failure in the field. To add further, the chain plates are punched progressively hole concentricity and accuracy of both diameter and pitch is maintained along the entire length of the chain. This successfully results in the quiet and accurate mesh with the sprockets, and eases pin extraction when splitting the chain. This quality helps retain the wax lubricant and results in the life of the chain being extended.

The chain pins on the other hand are specially hardened to ensure resistance to abrasion from dust and debris. This is maximized in order to minimize the stretch of the chain. Further, the chain is delivered pre tensioned. The initial stretch that is taken from the chain negates the need for re-tensioning of the drive and thus reduces ongoing maintenance costs. The wax lubricated chains can be run straight from the box, thanks to the debris that cannot adhere to this dry wax finish, the chain is protected against premature failure. The precision ground chain pins achieve a high grade surface area. It is this quality that helps the chain to retain the was lubricant and thus result in extending the life of the chain. The presence of 1900 Vickers Hardness in the connecting link pins also helps the chain in delivering a wear resistance that is unmatched in similar chains currently available.

Besides, a lubrication free version of the chain is also available. Made with sintered brushes that retain lubricant thereby negating external lubrication, this chain has an added benefit to operate at linear chain speeds of up to 2.5m/sec – more than twice the speed of a composite bush chain. In case of chain meshing with sprockets there is a slight difference in hardness value between the two to help reduce drive noise, as well as chain and sprocket wear. Are 8 speed chains compatible with 7 speed drive-trains?

I have an old road bike with a 7 Speed Cassette that needs replacing. I found the 7 speed cassette it takes rather easily, but the only chains I find are listed as 8 speed. Is all 7 and 8 speed stuff compatible? Also will a SRAM power link work on a Shimano chain?

An 8 speed chain will work fine on a 7 speed cassette. As long as the power link is the one for that width of chain, it will work on a Shimano chain.
