Does it have to be in excellent physical condition to handle Yoshinkan Aikido?
Some background on me, I was practicing karate, judo, and very Aikikai bit, but due to scheduling problems, decided to join a Yoshinkan from this week. I have researched a lot of both Aikikai and Yoshinkan, and I know Aikikai which is considered a "soft" and Yoshinkan style a "hard" style, but of course, I learned that depends on the instructor. But my question is, I know that both are similar, but there will be more emphasis on physical exercise in the warm-up, such as bending, running, etc? Will it be as "normal" Judo / Aikido warm-ups, which are mostly stretching, etc. I'm not that worried, but I just want to be ready, I have not made any significant cardio by time. thanks! I know that supposedly the Tokyo riot police have to know Yoshinkan, and obviously better be in excellent physical condition? What Agee?
In reality, no matter what physical condition you are, what matters is what state of mind to be in. Take part in a martial art not familiar with usually involves having to train the muscles that normally do not use regularly, so no matter his form, usually feels fatigued after trying something new. It's what to do after feeling the tiredness and fatigue that counts. If you really are determined to continue training and improve on it, sooner or later reach its peak in the art form. So do not worry too much about it. I remember the first time I tried Aikido in college and feeling totally overwhelmed by physical endurance training involved (it does require a lot of popular resistance as opposed to misconceptions, our sensei was very demanding and requires a minimum of 100 repetitions of each exercise and technique, heat only lasted 1 hour and not a minute less), I do not think I could last a minute, but after years of training, could go for an hour and still be able to lift the arms and stand. Just focus more on mastery of a technique at a time, I will soon.
