Comfort Bike
are ladies comfort bikes harder to pedal?

I have a Mountain Bike and I am looking for a more comfortable bike to pedal. I have checked out the comfort/boardwalk bike at walmart but it only has 6 or 7 gears and larger tires. Are these bikes more difficult to pedal since they only have 6 gears? or are they easier to pedal because of their lightweight? I notice all the comfort ladies bikes are only 6 gears. could someone add some insight on these bikes?

There are several things you have to overcome to move a bike forward.

1. Aerodynamics: Air is viscous and resists being pushed out of the way. Comfort bikes force you into a more upright position than most other types of bike, thus presenting more frontal area to the mass of air you’re riding through. This can cost you several miles per hour compared to the same level of effort on a road bike with drop bars. Even a properly fitted mountain bike will be at least a little more aerodynamic than a comfort bike.

2. Rolling resistance: A function of Tire Pressure and contact patch. Internal friction within the tire also plays a part. Higher quality tires with hight thread counts typically have less resistance. Comfort bikes would be better than mountain bikes, not as good as road bikes on this count.

3. Mass/weight: Heavier bikes require more effort to accelerate, ie, start up or climb. A good quality comfort bike might be a little lighter than a cheap mountain bike, but all Wallyworld bikes are going to be on the heavy side.

4. Drivetrain efficiency: # of gears plays a part because you have a relatively narrow RPM band where you generate maximum power. For a competitive cyclist this is typically around 90-105rpm. More gears let you spend more time in this power band by shifting up or down to keep you RPM constant over varying terrain and wind conditions. A higher quality chain and gears will also soak up less of your limited power transmitting pedal power to the Rear Wheel.

5. Frame: Cheap frames and wheelsets are typically more flexy, absorbing and wasting more of your limited horsepower.

Bottom line: Comfort bikes are generally purchased by new or inexperienced riders who think an upright position would be more comfortable. In reality, a properly sized, adjusted, and fitted road bike or mountain bike would be faster AND more comfortable.
